Update from Grenoble

The Commons Service Group has returned to Grenoble after successfully (we think so!) carrying out the Venice phase of the project. This blog provides an overview of our activities there.
Le Commons Service Group est rentré à Grenoble après avoir mené avec succès (nous le pensons!) cette deuxième phase du projet à Venise. Ce blog rassemble des images et des textes rappelant notre parcours.

Again, we extend a special thanks to the artists with whom we created the "inserts": Lara Almárcegui (Netherlands), Etienne Cliquet (France), Maura Doyle (Canada), Claude Lévêque (France), Chris Lloyd (Canada), Antje Schiffers (Germany), YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES (Korea). And artist/architect collective public works (UK) for their concept and design of a "kiosk", realised by Sylvie Vojik, for the Venice phase of the project. We'd also like to mention that unless otherwise stated, photo credits are Aaron Schmidt, Alice Vergara and Bastiand.

More Giardini Action

We visited the national pavilion of each artist participating in the project to invite them to present some of the respective artist(s)’ inserts on their info/press table. The Canadian, French and Korean pavilions welcomed the inserts, while the German and Dutch pavilions declined to participate in the project (as the German representative explained, the inserts interfered with the carefully considered corporate presentation).
Nous avons rendu visite à chacun des pavillons nationaux, nationalités représentées dans le projet soit parceque les artistes en sont issus soit parcequ'ils y vivent et travaillent. Nous avons demandé à ce que les inserts de ces artistes soient figurent là, sur les tables ou banques d'information et de presse -manifestant, par là, l'aspect cosmopolite de ce projet et, plus, le cosmopolitanisme en art contemporain. Les pavillons canadien, français et coréen ont chaleureusement accueillis les "inserts". Ils ont été refusés dans les pavillons hollandais et allemand (les représentants du pavillon allemand nous ont expliqué que les inserts perturberaient l'esthétique "corporate" dévellopée pour leur banque).

Radio Waves on the Sea / Ondes radios sur la mer...

WPS1 operated Art Radio from a boat docked next to the Giardini during the professional opening days of the Biennale, distributing personal radios for free to passers-by. The Commons Service Group was invited aboard for an interview by host Tony Guerrero, June 11th.
WPS1, une Radio Artistique temporaire embarquée sur une bateau accosté à proximité des Giardini. L'opération a duré le temps de l'ouverture aux professionnels de la biennale, des petites radios portatives ont été distribuées aux passants. Le Commons Service Group a été convié à bord et interviewé par Tony Guerrero, le 11 juin.


The interview went well---but the festive mood aboard the PS1 boat and on the airwaves was not to be rocked by any real discussion about a political issue such as the significance of the GATS for contemporary art production.
L'interview s'est bien déroulée---et l'ambiance festive régnant à bord n'a heureusement pas été troublé par des questions d'ordre politique ou l'évocation des incidences de l'application prochaine de l'AGCS pour le champ de l'art...!

Still we managed to get the word on the project out, and to distribute inserts and pins to those lounging on the decks...

Being in the same place at the convenient time, we followed up with an interview with London-based Audio Arts Magazine. Interviewer J. Wainwright.

On the invitation of a Biennale employee attending the bag-check at the Arsenale, we presented inserts and pins on the counter for Biennale-goers to take freely.
Sur l'invitation du gardien du vestiaire de l'Arsenale, nous disposons "inserts" et badges afin que chacun en dispose librement.

Mars Pavilion

Before going to Venice, we were in contact with Marina, who works at the Laboratorio Morion, a Cultural and Social Centre in Venice. Along with Global Project (www.globalproject.info/index-en.html), the Laboratorio Morion organised the Mars Pavilion project (www. marspavilion.org ). Cleaning up an abandoned area of the Giardini just outside the official Biennale grounds, the collective of artists and activists from all over Europe, established the Mars Pavilion, opening it up to local residents and the biennale public.

Dans la perspective d’agir à Venise, nous, le Commons Service Group, voulions rencontrer des groupes actifs sur le plan culturel et localement. C’est Aris Papathéodorou (samizdat.net), rencontré lors du projet ressources.samizdat.net, qui nous a mis en contact avec Marina. Elle est vénitienne, vit à Paris et à Venise, et travaille (" quand elle a des contrats ").

Marina est -selon ses mots- un " électron libre ", activiste et chercheuse, elle prête tête et mains fortes à plusieurs entreprises liées aux mouvements du libre : logiciels libres, accès libre à la culture et l’art… Le " libre " est une notion qu’elle juge trop large et, aujourd’hui, trop souvent dévoyée.

Grâce à Marina nous avons été accueillis et écoutés au Pavillon de Mars (www.marspavilion>org). Le Pavillon de Mars est une initiative locale et ponctuelle pour participer, sur le mode du travail collectif et de la mise en commun des connaissances à la biennale d’art contemporain, et faire entendre les exclus de la culture et de l’art à Venise.

Interview with Maria of Global Project

The Mars Pavilion organised the Mars Card event on the public opening day: a parade led by two Martian robots to request a one Euro entrance fee for those with a Mars Card.



Le 12 juin -ouverture publique de la biennale d’art contemporain de Venise- quelques dizaines d’habitants de Venise et alentours sont entré dans les Giardini gratuitement, certains n’avez jamais visité la biennale !

The Martians aimed to make the Biennale accessible to those with less financial means, particularly to local residents for whom the full entrance fee was prohibitive. Faced with a sizeable crowd and portable sound system, the Biennale attendants waived the entrance fee altogether.

GATS Free Zones at the 51st Venice Biennale

The Commons Service Group is establishing GATS FREE ZONES with a three-part kiosk created by public works. We are distributing the inserts created by the artists for this project, as well as pins declaring ART a ZONA FUORI GATS.
Le Commons Service Group -à partir de son kiosque tripartite conçu par public works- déclare des Zones Hors AGCS au travers de ses déambulations dans la ville de Venise et sa biennale. Nous distribuons les inserts produits avec les artistes collaborant au projet ainsi que des badges "we declare ART a ZONA FUORI GATS" -lire "Nous déclarons l'ART ZONE HORS AGCS".

Action on request of Romanian art professor Dorel Gaina inside the Romanian Pavilion, which was left vacant by Romanian artist Daniel Knorr.

Venice Biennale june 7th to the 14th

We are traveling to Venice for the opening of the Biennale to declare it ZONA FUORI GATS. We are traveling there with kiosks conceptualized by public works and realized by Sylvie Vojik to carry out our message. This blog will be updated in the following days with documents of our actions.
